Accident claims one life over festive season

A total of 22 people were killed in road accidents across Ekurhuleni over the festive season.

In Brakpan a total of ten collisions were recorded, with only one fatality after a motorcyclist collided with a sedan on Airport Drive on December 23.

According to EMPD spokesperson, Wilfred Kgasago, seven drivers were nabbed for drinking and driving in Brakpan and two in Tsakane.

Ninety speedsters were arrested over the holiday period.

Members of the EMPD also arrested two suspects, one for housebreaking and the other one for possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

Members of the Equestrian Unit monitored the Jan Smuts Dam on New Year’s Day and arrested two drivers for drunken driving, three males for narcotics (dagga and cat) valued at R500 and four for drinking in public.

“The members also confiscated fireworks and liquor, which is not allowed into the area around the dam.” said Kgasago.

He added that 57 complaints were attended to in Brakpan and three in Tsakane.

“Over the holiday period a total of 510 citations were issued in Brakpan and 635 in Tsakane for various traffic violations,” said Kgasago.
