The Minister will officially announce the outcome of the 2014 NSC examinations in an event to be broadcast live on TV and on the department’s website. Candidates will also access their results in various newspapers on January 6 using only exam numbers and no names.
According to reports, Professor John Volmink, the head of the council of standards body Umalusi, told City Press in an interview he expects the pass rate to drop between 3 per cent and 5 per cent.
The department said in a statement, “Candidates need to obtain their results at the school or exam centre where they wrote their examination.
“Teachers will be on hand to assist with queries and offer support and advice as well as provide relevant information where necessary.”
A total of 688 660 candidates registered to write the examination this year, of which 550 127 were Full Time candidates and 138 533 were Part Time candidates. These examinations were written across 6 740 examination centres with 65 000 invigilators supervising the process over 5 weeks.
KwaZulu-Natal Province had the largest Full Time enrollment (147 605 candidates) and Gauteng was the second province with the highest number of Full Time candidates at 101 284. The Northern Cape enrolled the smallest cohort of 9 504 Full Time candidates this year.
Nationally, 300 153 (54.6 per cent) female candidates, and 249 974 male candidates (45.4 per cent) have enrolled to write the 2014 NSC examination.
The national pass rate has climbed steadily from 60.6 per cent in 2009, soaring from 73.9 per cent in 2012 to an all-time post-1994 high of 78.2 per cent last year.
