Science talent on display

The First Annual Lebati Foundation Ekurhuleni Area Science Fair 2014 recently took place in Dalview.

The purpose of the fair was to discover scientific and technical talent in Ekurhuleni and to encourage the pursuit of careers in science and engineering.

More than 200 people attended the event and 57 learners from 10 local schools competed.

The fair was also attended by Matoto Shabangu, the director of the Department of Education’s Gauteng East District.

High School winners:
First: Hydraulic Brige Engineering: Ncedo Nhlapo, Siphesihle Moagi and Bongane Simelane (African School for Excellence).
Second: The Impanct of Pollution and its plausable mitigations: Tebogo Masetlane (Springs Girls High School).
Third: Solar Powered Helicopter: Mveli Nhlapo, Lebohang Jwambi and Arthur Muwirimi (African School for Excellence).

Primary School winners:
First: Climatic Planets: Mosa Penya, Oratile Mbonani, Katlego Matjomane, Jordan Gounder, Sanjana Omnath and Leishka Singh (Dalpark Private School).
Joint Second: Demonstration of the Importance of Oxygen: Thato Jensma (Brakpan Education Centre) and Kutlwano Kokwana (Dalpark Primary School).
Third: How To Plant A Tree: Katlego Mariti (Montessori Private Primary School)

Innovation Award Winners (voted by audience and peers):
Bikers for the Future: Nobuhle Hadebe, Masego Khumalo and Gugu Ngwenya (Phulong High School).
Hydraulic Bridge Engineering: Ncedo Nhlapo, Siphesihle Moagi and Bongane Simelane (African School For Excellence).
Solar Helicopter: Mveli Nhlapo, Lebohang Jwambi and Arthur Muwirimi (African School For Excellence).
Is Aids a Disease or Cancer: Mohammed Bembe and Siphelele Godo (Eureka High School).

Youngest Learners Prize:
Demonstration Of The Importance Of Oxygen: Thato Jensma (Brakpan Education Centre) and Kutlwano Kokwana (Dalpark Primary School).
How To Plant A Tree: Katlego Mariti (Montessori Private Primary School)
