EMPD Speed Unit vehicle stolen

A Nissan 1400 bakkie, belonging to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department's Speed Unit, was stolen from the Brakpan CBD, yesterday morning (Tuesday).

The vehicle was found to be missing at about 11.30am.

It was recovered by members of the EMPD Intervention Unit, in Germiston, at 12.15pm — less than an hour after it had been stolen.

According to EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago, the Intervention Unit members received the look-out alert for the bakkie and, on activation of the tracking system, they picked up the signal while travelling along the N3 freeway, near Vosloorus.

“This led them to Rondebult, where they found the vehicle along Kiwi Street,” said Kgasago.

“It was found undamaged and with all the speed equipment intact.”

The bakkie was taken to the SAPS’s van Ryn Deep Pound, in Benoni, and investigations are underway to track the perpetrators.
