Youngsters flock to career expo

The 2014 Ekurhuleni Career Expo kicked off on Monday, and more than 3 000 youngsters seeking advice and information on career opportunities, walked through the doors of the Alberton Civic Centre.

This is the second year the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has hosted the expo, which is aimed at exposing graduates, school-leavers and young entrepreneurs to various employment opportunities available at companies in and around Ekurhuleni.

“We are a municipality that hosts the biggest manufacturing sector in South Africa and can be called the workshop of Africa,” said Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele.

“We are also home to the continent’s busiest airport; these two elements are very relevant and key to our economic development.

“The hosting of this exhibition thus fits into our strategic vision, which involves re-organising and revitalising industry, so that our communities can benefit from job-creating economic growth.”

Some of the exhibitors at the two-day expo included South African Airways, SA Express and Mango, Ekurhuleni East and West Colleges, Boston City Campus, Siyafunda CTC and the Peermont Education Trust, engineering, procurement and construction management specialists Deltron Consulting, and civil engineering and project management consultancy Epitome Consulting.

Various government departments and parastatals were also present to share information on their job creation and entrepreneurship projects, including the Department of Public Enterprises, Department of Public Works, Department of Energy and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

The expo ended on Tuesday.
