EMPD issues 1123 fines over Easter weekend

Intensified operations by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department over the Easter weekend resulted in the arrest of 23 suspected drunken drivers and 30 speedsters.

The operation, which also saw the arrest of pedestrians drinking in public and the issuing of numerous citations, commenced at midday on Thursday, last week, and was conducted throughout the whole Ekurhuleni region.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, over the past few weeks road users were reminded by way of education campaigns of the importance of obeying the rules of the road in order to avoid unnecessary loss of limb and life.

“Static and roving roadblocks targeting both hazardous locations in respect of accidents, smash-and-grabs and other crimes have been the order of the day,” he said.

“Taverns were also targeted with the aim of ensuring that patrons don’t drink in public as well as making certain that they comply with the conditions of their permits.”

Twenty three suspected drunk drivers were arrested in Vosloorus, Kempton Park, Daveyton and KwaThema.

Thirty speedsters were arrested in Brakpan, Benoni and Kempton Park, and 1123 speeding fines were issued overall to motorists for exceeding the speed limit.

In addition, 12 people were arrested for drinking in public, two for being in possession of fake driving licences and one for impersonating a police officer, and 13 un-roadworthy vehicles were impounded.

Two fatalities were recorded in Ekurhuleni since the start of the operation.

“One took place on Friday, last week, in Brakpan where a driver lost control and collided with a concrete wall,” said Kgasago.

“The second fatality occurred on Sunday, last week, in Boksburg, where a taxi collided with a Tata.

“The driver of the Tata died on the scene.”
