Violent crime thrives

Murder, attempted murder and armed robberies reported to police over the weekend.

A 36-year-old man was shot and killed in an attempted robbery, outside a Brakpan bottle store, on Saturday night, last week.

Chinese national Asjin-Chen was shot in the stomach when three would-be robbers attempted to enter MC Liquor Store, at about 8pm.

The store is situated on the corner of Stoffberg Avenue and Prince George Avenue.

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, the doors of the store are open throughout the day, but, from 6pm until closing time, at 8pm, the security gate is locked and customers are permitted into the store only one at a time.

“It is believed that a customer was in the store when three men arrived and tried to force their way inside,” said Joubert.

“The deceased tried to push them out and they fired shots at him, wounding him in the abdomen.”

The men fled and Asjin-Chen was declared dead on the scene.

A case of murder has been opened at the Brakpan Police Station.

Several other violent crimes were reported to local police over the weekend.

On Friday, three friends were robbed by two armed men in Minnebron.

The friends had arrived at an address in Koos Vorster Avenue, at about 5pm, and were waiting for the gate to open when a silver Audi stopped next to them.

A man with a gun alighted the vehicle and pointed the weapon at the group.

Another robber approached and demanded their belongings.

The robbers made off with jewellery, including an expensive Rolex wristwatch, cellphones and handbags.

Later that evening, at 9.30pm, a Rand Collieries woman (40) was injured by broken glass, when shots were fired outside her home.

It is believed the woman disturbed two men inside her Dirk van der Hoff Street home, when she arrived at the house.

“The dogs were barking and as she went to look, shots were fired from outside, which struck the window,” said Joubert.

“The broken glass cut her head and she was taken to hospital.”

The woman was later discharged and police are investigating cases of armed robbery and attempted murder.

On Sunday morning, three robbers terrorised a man and his wife in their Prins Road, Withok, home.

The man heard footsteps just after midnight and awakened his wife.

The pair were suddenly confronted by three men, who pointed firearms at them.

The robbers forced the husband to undress and fled with a cellphone valued at R350.

Two armed thugs struck again later that evening, when a café in Prince George Avenue was robbed.

A cashier was held at gunpoint by two armed men at about 7.30pm.

The robbers fled with two cellphones, airtime, cigarettes and cash.
