Epilepsy SA goes green

Epilepsy South Africa's Gauteng branch, which is based in Springs, has adopted an eco-friendly existence.

Going green has helped the organisation save 50 per cent on its electricity bill and 30 per cent on water.

Heat pumps were installed at the Geduld and Daggafontein Centre’s to save costs.

A heat pump is a highly efficient, cost effective method of heating water.

It utilizes the sun’s energy by extracting heat from the sun-warmed air and transferring it efficiently to the water.

Because the heat pump moves the free heat from the outside air to the water, rather than create heat, as a fossil fuel or electric resistance heater does, it can heat your geyser water for up to 70 per cent less cost than these other less efficient methods.

As the ambient temperatures change, the heating output of a heat pump will vary.

Even when temperatures are cooler the heat pump continues to transfer heat between air and water.

The branch is also looking to go green by retrieving rain water into tanks for gardening purposes.

The borehole water at the Geduld Centre is connected to a hydroponic watering system, therefore saving costs on water every month.

The borehole water at Daggafontein Centre is used for laundry and watering the gardens.
