Man caught driving at double the speed limit

A 41-year-old man was caught driving at a blistering speed of 166km/h in an 80km/h zone, by members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department.

The speedster, travelling in a Jeep SUV, was arrested for reckless and negligent driving at about 5.30am on Tuesday morning, last week, along the R23.

“Five other drivers also ended up behind bars that day, after they were caught doing speeds of between 117km/h and 134km/h on the same stretch of road,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

On Monday, the EMPD held a speed enforcement operation along Main Reef Road, between the Weltevreden Landfill Site and Apex Road, and arrested 10 people for exceeding the speed limit of 60km/h.

“The highest speedster was clocked at 111km/h and the rest registered speeds of between 100km/h and 109km/h,” said Kgasago.

An operation along the same road, on Wednesday, last week, resulted in the arrest of nine drivers.

They were nabbed at between 5am and 5.30am, for driving at speeds between 100km/h and 121km/h.

Four more drivers were arrested on Wednesday, last week, for speeding along the R23.

On Friday, last week, nine driver were arrested for speeding on the R554, between Farquharson Road and the R23 — a 70km/h zone.

The arrested speedsters included a taxi driver caught doing 130km/h, who claimed he was rushing to a taxi rank.

“In total, 38 speedsters were arrested in the Brakpan area between Tuesday, last week and Monday,” added Kgasago.
