‘Chop shop’ men try to bribe their way out of arrest

Two men found on the premises of a suspected "chop shop", in Brakpan, allegedly tried to bribe their way out of being arrested.

The men, aged 31 and 38, offered a sum of cash to members of the Brakpan Cluster’s Anti-Hijacking Task Team, after suspected stolen vehicles were found in their possession on Friday, last week.

Capt Joep Joubert told the Herald that the men were nabbed at an address along Siding Avenue, at about 9am.

“The members searched the premises and found a Toyota Hilux, a stripped red Volkswagen Golf and two Nissan 1400 bakkie engines,” he said.

Joubert explained that the serial number of one of the engines had been tampered with, and that a number plate belonging to another Nissan 1400 bakkie had also been found.

“This bakkie was stolen in Tsakane last month,” he added.

The men were duly arrested and face charges of being in possession of suspected stolen property, as well as bribery.
