Fleeing robbers shoot two car guards

Two car guards -- a 69-year-old man and his daughter (44) -- were shot and critically injured by two men, following a robbery outside a bank this morning (Monday).

Barend and Kathleen Oosthuizen were shot while allegedly trying to stop the robbers as they fled the scene.

The incident took place along Queen Avenue at about 9am.

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan police station commander, the men had robbed a petrol station employee in front of a Voortrekker Street bank at about 8.45am.

“The employee was confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, as he was about to enter the bank to make a cash deposit,” said Joubert.

“One suspect grabbed the black carry bag containing the cash and both fled the scene on foot, towards the parking area in Queen Avenue.

“The two car guards on duty in the parking area tried to stop the suspects and the suspects fired shots at them.”

Joubert told the Herald that Barend was shot once in the stomach, while Kathleen was shot twice in the stomach.

Netcare 911 paramedics and other emergency services responded to the shooting.

“Upon their arrival on the scene just after 9am, they found that two people were in a critical condition following the shooting incident,” said Santi Steinmann, media liaison officer for Netcare Limited.

“Both injured people were treated on scene and rushed to hospital for further medical care.”

Brakpan police believe that three more suspects were waiting in the parking area for the two robbers.

“The suspect dropped the bag of cash and all five suspects got into a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee and sped off,” said Joubert.

“Police gave chase but lost the suspects close to Daveyton.”

Joubert added that a Toyota Hilux parked in the area was also hit by bullets.

  1. The information regarding Kathleen is incorrect and false she is still in icu recovering. She is in a stable condition.

  2. How sad!! And so much for the holier than thou’s who last year in an afrikaans magazine called car guards an irritation and beggars. However just look at this, these two people did not give their own safety a thought, they tried to prevent criminals getting away..yes they acted without thinking, and some will label it stupid, but the bravery is to be commended, such a pity though that it took a life and caused another to be shot.
Condolences to the daughter of the deceased and the family, may the daughter make a full and speedy recovery and to you “holier than thou’s” get off your self assembled pedestals, you are the trash of society. These car guards do an honest job will YOU do that job? if there is no other solution?? NO? thought so!!
