Cash-in-transit robbers strike at Mall@Carnival

Three police helicopters circled the area around the Mall@Carnival this morning, after a cash-in-transit vehicle was robbed on its premises.

The robbery took place in the loading area near entrance four (Dischem) at about 9.50am, when the vehicle parked at the mall to offload cash.

Four security officers entered the mall, while the driver stayed in the vehicle.

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan police station commander, the driver climbed out of the vehicle after an alarm inside the vehicle was triggered.

“This alarm signals when something is too close to the vehicle on the outside or the vehicle is being tampered with,” said Joubert.

“After getting out, the driver saw a white Volkswagen Polo parked directly behind him and noticed that the cash-in-transit vehicle’s backdoor was open.

“He then saw two men taking money from the vehicle.”

Joubert told the Herald that the driver then opened fire on the men and they fled the scene in the Polo.

The car’s back window was hit during the shooting and police believe one or both occupants may have been injured.

A third man, who fled the scene on foot, is also suspected to have been involved.

“They took ten containers of an undisclosed amount of cash,” added Joubert.
