Stolen car case still under investigation

The case against two men, arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen vehicles on Thursday morning, last week, was later withdrawn by Brakpan police.

The men, aged 32 and 37, were arrested at an address in Colliery Street, Rand Collieries, where five suspected stolen vehicles were found.

A tip-off led members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department and the Brakpan Cluster Crime Intelligence Unit to the property at about 7am.

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, the five vehicles were allegedly stolen during 2013, in Brakpan and Primrose.

“One of the suspects is the owner of a scrap yard in Hoy Avenue, and he was using the premises in Colliery Street for the storage of vehicles,” said Joubert.

“The five suspected stolen vehicles were partly stripped.”

Reports have indicated that the pair were stripping and selling the parts, and that Brakpan police were aware of the activities.

Joubert told the Herald that the case was withdrawn after a discussion with station commander Brig Johannes Manyathele, and that it is still under investigation.
