Fourteen in a row for Muriel Brand

Muriel Brand School’s Grade 12 learners of 2013 did the school proud by all passing the National Senior Certificate exams.

This is the 14th consecutive year that the school has had a 100 per cent pass rate.

Half of the learners achieved university exemption.

“This is an exceptional achievement for a special school that caters for learners with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities, as well as specific learning disabilities and dyslexia,” said principal Dr Leon Stander.

“The school follows the same Grade 12 curriculum as ordinary schools and the learners write the same papers as ordinary schools.”

Both Afrikaans and English medium instruction are offered.

The top achievers for 2013 are Thinus van Staden, who obtained three distinctions, and Lorraine Kraft, who obtained one distinction.

The other Grade 12 pupils are Carla Nel, Samantha Bartlett, Stefan de Beer, Wade Dearlove, Hanrich Dekker, Dirkie du Koker, Lucinda du Koker, Reynhardt Kok, Lebo Lebogang, Carla Liebenberg, Karabo Makoanyane, Sisi Mazibuko, Kabelo Morulane, Stephen Myburgh, Jacobus Pienaar, Simoné Sarakis, Lorato Sibanda, Chanel Stephenson, Charne Tromp and Jaco Wessels.

Many of these youngsters’ association with the school dates back more than 15 years, to when they attended outpatient therapy in the school’s therapy departments.

Their school careers started in the school’s nursery department, when they were three years old.

They then had to progress through all the academic phases to eventually reach Grade 12.
