Dogfighting suspects appear in court

Thirteen people accused of being involved in dogfighting were denied bail in the Tsakane Magistrates Court on Monday.

The 13, as well as five others, were arrested on Sunday, November 3, at an address in Tsakane for their involvement in a dog-fighting syndicate (SAPS and NSPCA walk in on violent, organised dog fights, Herald, November 8).

Five of the accused were granted bail during their first court appearance, held on Monday, last week.

During the raid, which was conducted by the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) and members of the SAPS, 14 pitbull type dogs were removed.

Five of the dogs were euthanased on site and eight more were euthansed later that evening, due to the extent of their injuries.

“The NSPCA is sickened by the heartlessness of the individuals who have utilised these animals in this horrific blood sport to feed their egos and enrich themselves financially,” said Jaco Pieterse from the NSPCA.”

“Their unspeakable cruelty has resulted in extreme physical suffering, mental abuse and loss of life.”

Pieterse stated that the organisation welcomed the decision by the court to deny bail.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that those responsible for these horrendously violent crimes receive the maximum penalty available under the law,” he added.

The suspects are due back in court on Monday, November 18.
