Dog fighting syndicate busted

Eighteen people were arrested in the largest successful raid on a dog fighting syndicate since 1995 at an address in Tsakane last night (Sunday).

According to the National Council of SPCA’s (NSPCA), 14 pit bull type dogs were also removed during the raid by the NSPCA task team and SAPS members.

In a media statement, the NSPCA confirmed that violent and organised dog fighting was in progress when the task team arrived and that everyone present at the scene was involved in illegal dog fighting, and active gambling and betting on the contests were taking place.

An eye-witness member of the NSPCA task team reported that the scene was “incredibly horrific” and was shocked at the reality of the terrible suffering and violence experienced by these dogs.

Reference was made to the extent of the injuries of some of the dogs, some so massively wounded as to be beyond salvation.

The NSPCA shares the concerns of genuine pit bull lovers who may have had dogs stolen.

Reassurance is given in this regard as none of the dogs rescued in last night’s raid were stolen pets as each dog was bred by this fighting community and had been used for fighting for an extended period of time.

Criminal charges were laid in terms of the Animal Protection Act No 71 of 1962.

The accused are due to appear in the Tsakane Magistrates Court today for a bail hearing.

The dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion or infection hours or even days after the fight and very seldom do they receive proper veterinary attention for their injuries.

Hailing the raid, arrests and seizure of the dogs as a breakthrough, the NSPCA confirmed that its investigations into this and all forms of cruelty to animals will continue.

This raid proves the reality, horror and extreme cruelty of dog fighting,  a blight which needs to be eradicated from our society.

The NSPCA expressed appreciation and thanks to the dedicated and professional individuals from the SAPS who assisted with this special operation.

  2. Thanks to the NSPCA for taking action against these idiots! This is so horrendous! The poor dogs must be put to all this pain and suffering while these idiots are smiling and encouraging this ‘trade’!!!! Its unfortunately never going to stop them!!! I just hope that they are punished to the full extent of the law!!!! Pitbulls are mainly used and this makes them to be an aggressive breed which is NOT true at all! Any breed can be vicious if trained. This is just so very cruel!

  6. Its awesome that they are finally caught, now please check out a house in park street next to komando school as dogs get stolen and taken there. When I reported it to police, they didn’t want to do anything about it. I was just lucky to get my dog back after he was stolen and taken to the property.
