Get to know Soccer World Cup Group D

Get to know the various groups for the Soccer World Cup being held in Brazil this year.

Group D

Uruguay: Luis Suarez

The Liverpool frontman was again in sublime form last season as he lead the Merseysiders’ title charge with 31 goals, earning him the European Golden Shoe award which he shares with Cristiano Ronaldo.

But following a recent knee surgery, Suarez is in a race against time to feature for Uruguay this summer. If he does star, La Celeste should have every chance of progressing in a group which includes England, Costa Rica and Italy.

Costa Rica: Bryan Ruiz

Ruiz and his Costa Rica side come in as underdogs in their group and if any upsets are to be caused, expect the charge to be lead by the skipper himself.

England: Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge and Liverpool striking partner Suarez, collectively known as SAS, took me down memory lane when most footballing teams used two strikers as their attacking formula. The two scored 52 goals (Sturridge 21 goals) between them to guide Liverpool to a runners-up finish in the Premier League.

If the 24-year-old’s recent goal against Peru is a sign of things to come, Roy Hodgson’s men stand a great chance to advance.

Italy: Mario Balotelli

The Rossoneri forward lead his country to the Euro 2012 final where they lost to eventual winners Spain.

His two goals in the semi-final against Germany underlined his influence. With his skill and unpredictability, the Azzuri, who also boast an engine room consisting of Andrea Pirlo and Daniele de Rossi, are undoubtedly one of the favourites to progress from the group. – @SabeloBoksburg
