Brakpan overcome archenemies

It was a bit of a wake-up call for Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV, when the team travelled to Olympia Park, in neighbouring Springs, on Saturday, May 30, in the Valke Peregrine League.

The “Panne” side were made to graft hard to pick up all five points from their clash in the backyard of the team who took Brakpan’s place in this year’s Cell C Community Cup, the elite club rugby tournament in the country.

After scoring close on 200 points in their first four Peregrine League clashes, the team were fortunate to take the victory over their neighbours by just three points, in the encounter that finished 29-26 in favour of the men from Bosman Stadium.

With Brakpan crossing their opponents’ try line on four occasions, they secured the always important bonus point.

The Springs scrum gave the Panne pack an extremely difficult time on Saturday, particularly with first choice prop Jason Arundel absent on the day.

Utility back Gido Horn was also injured for a large portion of the game.

Winger Thinus Ueckermann moved to centre after Horn sustained the knock and scored a fantastic try after running almost the entire length of the field to dot down.

Tobie Strydom, Shaun Botes and Sweef Potgieter also scored five-pointers on the day, while Ashley Buchler scored nine points from his boot.

Other results: u-21s: Brakpan 23 – Springs 24; second teams: Brakpan 23 – Springs 13.
