‘Panne’ climb to top spot

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV have moved into first position in the Valke Peregrine League.

This comes after a dominant 36-3 victory over their nearest competitors in the league, Vereeniging Rugby Club, on Saturday, May 23, at Bosman Stadium.

Captain Francois Robbertse’s side have been on a four-game winning run since the Peregrine League began, in April, and the ”Panne” have made mincemeat of every opponent they have faced at home and on their travels.

Things are looking extremely positive for Brakpan in their quest for qualification for the 2016 Cell C Community Cup, and they will be hoping to do a number on this year’s Valke Community Cup representatives, Springs, away from home on Saturday, May 30.

At Bosman, on Saturday, Brakpan made it clear that they are undeniably the strongest team in the Valke region.

Leading 12-0 at the halftime break, Brakpan (through the impact of players Wikus van der Berg, Theo Mynhardt and Theo Bekker) began controlling play through the use of their forward pack.

Kyle Hinton, at number 10, was stretchered off with a concussion.

Gido Horn moved from fullback to the flyhalf position, while Dirk Odendaal, usually a centre, moved to 15 and put in a solid shift.

Hooker Jacques Moller was named Man of the Match, due to his accurate line-out throw-ins to the Panne locks.

In fact, Brakpan’s forwards were so dominant against Vereeniging that they also forced their opponents into conceding two penalty tries.

Brakpan’s try-scorers on Saturday were, with two penalty tries:, Shaun Botes, Jason Arundel, Jacques Moller and Wikus van der Berg. Conversions: Gido Horn (three).

Other results versus Vereeniging on the day saw the club’s u-21 team win 31-11, while the second XV lost 16-19.
