Former pupil of Die Anker could become Miss Earth

Allesandri Pereira (19), who matriculated in 2013 at Hoërskool Die Anker, was recently chosen as a regional semi-finalist for the Miss Earth South Africa programme.

This programme is focused on developing and empowering young women to create a sustainable difference and to combat the destruction of South Africa’s natural heritage.

Allesandri, a second year BCom Entrepreneurship and Business Management student at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus, said that she never thought she would become a semi-finalist.

“I’m actually a very down to earth person and this programme fits me perfectly,” she added.

“The most important thing for me is to create a platform to help other people.

“I’m looking forward to assist a primary school to establish a sustainable vegetable garden and all the other projects that will come on my green journey.”

Allesandri has taken part in other pageants.

She was Miss Anker in 2012, but added that Miss Earth is special, because the focus is not on beauty, but rather on reaching out to people and the environment.

“I want to educate young children about how to live green and how to get involved in environmental sustainability,” she said.

Allesandri’s mother, Daleen Pereira, said that her daughter’s selflessness comes from her father and that she’s proud to have a daughter like her.

“We are excited about the current group of Miss Earth South Africa regional semi-finalists,” said Catherine Constantinides, executive director of the Miss Earth South Africa programme.

“Projects to be completed by our semi-finalists include the establishment of a food garden or waste project involving a primary school, as well as the planting of 10 indigenous trees and participation in the annual Miss Earth South Africa Clean-Ups.

“We are looking forward to seeing the results as these young women embark on their green journeys within their communities.”
