Senior citizens move with ease

“Kuguga othandayo” was the theme at the Vuka Move for Health Day, which recently took place at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre.

This theme was evident among the scores of elderly Ekurhuleni residents, who moved with ease as the aerobics instructor took them through a workout.

The senior citizens were invited by the City of Ekurhuleni to the Wellness Day, where the importance of leading an active lifestyle was reiterated, especially as one ages and becomes susceptible to illness.

The activities of the day included indoor aerobics, skipping rope competitions and health screening for hypertension and other non-communicable diseases.

Ekurhuleni environmental health practitioners educated the residents about the importance of cleanliness and how clean and hygienic behaviour has a positive impact on the environment.

Seedwell Mthembu (71), who participates in the Ekurhuleni Golden Games, expressed his disappointment when he learned that his 35-year-old stationary vehicle, which he uses for storage, is among the contributing factors that cause household pests.

“I am looking after my health, therefore my home environment also needs to be taken care of,” said Mthembu.

“I always see rats running around in the yard, but did not know that the clutter I keep in the vehicle is what the rats call home.”

“After today I will start keeping my environment at home clean and continue leading a healthy active lifestyle.”

Amongst the important tips the elders took home was to have regular health checks, keep their households clean, throw away old items they no longer use and to wake up and move for their health.

Ekurhuleni environmental health practitioners Masego Moalusi and Vuyiseka Meya teach Seedwell Mthembu (71) that a cleaner, greener Ekurhuleni starts with him, as a resident, during the Vuka Move for Health Day, held recently in Brakpan.
