Avoid becoming another crime statistic

On Tuesday evening, March 10, SABC contributing editor, Vuyo Mvoko, and staff members were mugged while preparing for a live crossing outside Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

The entire incident was caught on camera. At the beginning of the footage, one can clearly see that something potentially dangerous is about to unfold

The three suspects walk past the news crew a number of times, before actually plucking up the courage to rob them. Two of the three suspects, who stole cellphones and a laptop from the crew, can be clearly identified from the footage.

One can only assume that these thieves either wanted their five seconds of fame or they are not the sharpest tools in the shed.

Unfortunately, we live in a country where the chances of falling victim to crime are higher than that of a young graduate finding a job.

Considering incidents like the two police officers, who are supposed to protect us, being robbed of their firearms and locked in their van, there are times when we can only count on ourselves for protection.

After being mugged five times in the past decade, I think it is safe for me to say that I am a pro at spotting the common criminal.

Fortunately, my paranoia and intuition have saved me from any further incidents, and my “expertise” in this field will hopefully help you minimize the chances of becoming a victim of crime.

Five safety tips to keep in mind:

>>Be vigilant at all times and keep a look out for suspicious characters.

>>Do not flash your valuables around as you are just asking to be targeted.

>>If a stranger asks you a question, don’t answer, rather walk away. Some criminals will try talking to you just to get your guard down before they pounce.

>>Walk in groups; there is safety in numbers.

>>If you do get held up, keep calm and do as the assailants say because not doing what they want will only aggravate them.
