Dark cloud hangs over United

While things have been promising for United Cricket Club’s Premier XI on the field of play, external municipal infrastructural factors have placed the club’s Premier League and overall existence in the balance.

The Premier League team is sitting in a respectable position in fifth place in the Eastern Premier League just two points behind defending champions Kempton Park and four points ahead of sixth-placed Duduza as the teams reemerge from the festive break for the second half of the season on Sunday, January 11.

However, heavy rainfall in recent days has not made it a happy new year for those in charge of facilities at the club as the sewerage problems that plagued United Cricket Club last year have again reared its ugly head and the issues faced last year have not been dealt with by the metro.

In November, the metro’s spokesperson Themba Gadebe informed The Herald that the recurrence of the sewage spill was a problem and that the matter was being attended to.

“There is a big cloud hanging over our head and a few of our first home fixtures could be in jeopardy,” said facilities manager and Premier League manager Des Gamble.

“There is a big scramble at the moment to try and find an alternative venue for our Premier League matches.”

“We need somebody at the metro to tell us if something can be done about the problem.

“If we need to move the club to somewhere else then we need to know.

“The Eastern Cricket Union is trying to assist us with the matter, however we are still struggling to get answers,” added Gamble.

The Herald sent a request for comment and a request for action to be taken to the metro on Tuesday, January 6.

  • On the cricketing front the Premier XI has welcomed back batsman Branden Grutter to the team.

He will fill the void left by Aidan Justus who has joined the Tuks Academy, while they have also brought in an additional spinner to bolster their bowling department.
