Keep an eye on Dube’s juniors

Royal Oak Country Club’s club professional and golf director Kenneth Dube is doing his bit to develop young golfers in the community.

His investment in junior players through his Kenneth Dube Golf Academy is bearing fruit as a few of his young students are standing out on the fairways and greens at recent junior tournaments.

One such student who is certainly one for the future is 15-year-old Brakpan High School pupil Mzwakhe Nkomo.

The golfer has been playing for three years and has improved in leaps and bounds under the tutelage of Dube and his coaching team.

Nkomo recently claimed number one spot at the Ekurhuleni Junior Open at the Lake Club Benoni by one shot with a score of 77.

“My golf has improved a lot, because I have been practising a lot,” said the youngster.

“During the school holidays I try come to the course and practise every day.”

He was also named as the club’s Most Improved Junior Player at a prize-giving held after the Royal Oak Junior Championship that was held on Tuesday, December 9, with over 30 juniors swinging it out.

Two female golfers from Dube’s Academy are also showing terrific potential.

Mbali Mahlangu (17) and Ashley Harmse (15) had a fantastic year in the Ekurhuleni Golf Union’s (EGU) Junior Girls Golf League.

Both golfers placed first at various tournaments held at numerous courses throughout the region.

The results from the Royal Oak Junior Championship on December 9 are:

A-Division: 1 T Greyling 75 gross, 2 D Wessels 80 gross.

B-Division: 1 M Nkomo 45, 2 C Raper 40, 3 J Coetano 38.

C-Division: 1 T Khoza 39, 2 J Roux 37, 3 M Mahlangu 37.
