Naima Kay set to light-up the Big Top

Carnival City is proud to present one of the newest, brightest-shining stars in the South African music industry -- SAMA Award-winning songstress Naima Kay -- as part of its highly-anticipated Reconciliation Day concert, 'In the Company Of'.

The concert will take place in the Big Top Arena on December 15.

The exceptionally-talented, fast-rising young performer joins a star-studded line-up of artists for the show, including Freshly Ground, Bhudaza, and Wanda Baloyi.

“We are excited to host this emerging young star on our stage for the first time,” said Jaco Saaiman, entertainment manager at Carnival City.

“Although she has only been performing for a short time, she is making spectacular strides and winning hearts across the country.

“Carnival City is ever-committed to giving local talent a platform to shine, and we are looking forward to Naima lighting up our stage.”

The Port Shepstone-born beauty always believed that she would one day make a career out of music.

Music always surrounded her and she had a fond appreciation for Mirium Makeba, Dorothy Masuka, and Mama uBusi Mhlongo.

But, it was only after she had spent two years working at the post office that she was discovered by Touch Africa Records’ Mdu Ngcobo while performing at the Ugu Jazz festival in Port Shepstone.

He spotted her talent immediately and proposed a record deal with her.

The 23-year-old singer, born Lungile Khumalo, jumped at the opportunity and took on her stage name Naima Kay.

In mid 2013, she released her first album to wide acclaim, and then went on to win the 2014 South AfricanMusic Award (Sama) for Best Newcomer.

Kay’s first album, Umsebenzi, is clearly rooted in her Christian beliefs, but it is also a hip and fresh interpretation of Afro-pop.

Her tunes have been remixed by the likes of Heavy K to create a more urban dance sound.

But the messages in her songs remain the strongest element.

She promises to bring an exuberant yet soul-lifting peacefulness to ‘In the Company Of’.
