Former combatants sent to school

About 51 former combatants in the City of Ekurhuleni will be marching to school to study artisan courses, which will prepare them for employment opportunities and equip them to start their own businesses.

The City of Ekurhuleni has enrolled the former liberation struggle fighters to study various courses ranging from information communication and technology (ICT), to plumbing, electrical and carpentry.

On Wednesday, last week, the municipality signed an agreement with Ekurhuleni East and West Colleges for further education and training in Germiston, which will see the veterans commence with their studies from August 18 until December.

The training programme will also provide the participants with a stipend of at least of R2 500 monthly.

Ex-combatant Mandla Mkhonza (39), who served in the self-defence unit of Umkhonto we Sizwe, is excited about this great opportunity and looking forward to starting his electrical course.
