Carpet cleaners and jewellery disappear

A Dalpark Extension 11 woman was robbed of thousands of rand worth of jewellery, allegedly by employees of a carpet and upholstery cleaning company.

The woman’s husband contacted the Herald to warn other residents.

“They don’t even have to break in, as you allow them in, and you also pay for the service,” said Chris Booysen.

According to Booysen, the employees visited their Lawrence Road home on Thursday, last week, to steam clean their carpets and couches.

“In the afternoon, when my wife was getting ready, she discovered, to her dismay, that all her jewellery was missing,” he said.

“Fifty years of her life’s collection, totalling close to R200 000 in rings, watches and chains.”

Booysen’s wife immediately contacted the business owner.

“She was informed that he didn’t know where the cleaners were, and that they had been in a vehicle accident somewhere on the East Rand,” said Booysen.

The owner also allegedly claimed that the employees were in a hospital “somewhere on the East Rand”, and added that if more information is required a police case number must be provided.

“To date, he still hasn’t had the decency to contact us to say whether he has tracked them down, or if he has confronted them about the allegations,” said Booysen.

The incident was reported to the Brakpan police.
