Phillips, Aucamp nominated for awards

Sports stars from every corner of Ekurhuleni will shine brightly on Friday, March 14, when the Ekurhuleni Metro honours their excellence at the third annual Ekurhuleni Sports Awards.

Executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele will celebrate the local sportsmen and women who make the city proud in their various disciplines, at a glittering ceremony to be held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, in Boksburg.

Three nominees for each of the categories have been selected and, on the night, winners will be announced.

Brakpan is represented at the awards, with nominees Peet Aucamp (in the outstanding sports official/administrator of the year category) and kick boxer Ryan Phillips in the (Sportsman of the Year category).

Gungubele will also present a special mayoral award to individuals or teams who have contributed to the development, transformation and upliftment of standards for sport in Ekurhuleni.

Nominees, according to categories, are:

  • Outstanding sports official/administrator of the year: Peet Aucamp – ringball (Brakpan), Callum Bremner – ice hockey (Kew), Christina Margaret Caldeira – badminton (Benoni).
  • Team of the Year: KwaThema Disability Football Club (KwaThema), Shorin Kampo South Africa Karate Club (Katlehong), Valke Rugby Union – Sevens Rugby (Kempton Park).
  • Primary Sports School of the Year: Farrarmere Primary School (Benoni), Laerskool Rynfield (Benoni).
  • Secondary Sports School of the Year: Hoërskool Kempton Park (Kempton Park), Tisetsong High School (Thokoza), Norkem Park High School (Kempton Park).
  • Sports Federation of the Year: Eastern Gauteng Badminton Association (Benoni), Ekurhuleni Basketball Association (Germiston), Eastern Gauteng Wrestling (Boksburg).
  • Coach of the Year: Nico Coetzee (Boksburg) – wrestling, Gavin Bennett (Boksburg) – baseball, Johannes Smith (Benoni) – athletics.
  • Junior Sportsman of the Year: Gareth Bremner (Kew) – ice hockey, Kyle Mcclatchie (Kempton Park) – golf, Eckhard Rossouw (Kempton Park) – athletics.
  • Junior Sportswoman of the Year: Shianne Addinall (Boksburg) – barefoot water-ski, Alison C’nedra Allan (Benoni) – ringball, Verochka Els (Benoni) – ringball.
  • Sportsman of the Year with a Disability: Ernst Conradie (Primrose) – golf, Bongani Dlamini (Tembisa) – wheelchair tennis, Lifa Sam Gova (KwaThema) – football.
  • Sportsman of the Year: Christiaan Bezuidenhout (Benoni) – golf, Gaston Palmer (Benoni) – ju-jitsu, Ryan Phillips (Brakpan) – kick boxing.
  • Sportswoman of the Year: Bernadette Coston (Alberton) – hockey, Tshepiso Mary Jane Lesiba (Katlehong) – karate, Mpho Madi (Boksburg) – wrestling.
