EMPD issues hundreds of fines

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department has urged motorists to have their driving licences with them at all times.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the number of people caught driving in Brakpan without their licences increases on a weekly basis.

“In the past week alone, more than 150 drivers were fined for not having their driving licences with them in their vehicles,” he said.

“Drivers must understand that the worst case scenario would be for the officer to stop the driver from continuing with his or her journey until a driving licence is produced.”

In addition to these fines, 33 were issued to drivers for failing to produce a valid Professional Driving Permit, 48 for failing to renew their vehicle licences, one for not having a certificate of fitness and 14 for failing to display number plates.

“Fifteen fines were issued for jumping red lights, 32 for disregarding stop and yield signs, 20 for using cellphones without a hands-free kit, 10 for overloading and 46 for not wearing seatbelts,” said Kgasago.

“Three arrests were made for reckless driving, one for drunken driving and one for failing to furnish officers with a name and address.”

The EMPD also seized eight unroadworthy vehicles.

Speed enforcement operations in the Brakpan area over the past week resulted in the arrest of 41 speedsters.

The offenders were all caught along the R23.

“All the arrested speedsters have a date with a magistrate, to explain their irresponsible and dangerous actions,” added Kgasago.

  1. It is with joy to see that the EMPD eventually started doing the job they were employed to do. Sadly I am just wondering how long this will last and if everyone they do stop are fined or is it selected drivers being fined.

I was one of the unlucky ones to be fines during the last few days for not looking when a robot turned red. My fault I accept the consequences, but what I could not understand is the manner the EMPD Officer in vehicle XRW124GP had to make to pull me over, he had to make a U-turn at the robot in front of other vehicles, which had to move out of his way, drove like a maniac and tried to push me off the road just to make his presence known to give me my fine. Afterwards he got in his vehicle and U-turned again in front of other vehicles.

Should he not have adhered to the rules of the road the same as what I needed to do.

    Just asking.
