Brakpan team claims the third prize

The Caxton Reynolds Race came to an end on Saturday and, although the Brakpan team did not secure the first prize, they described the experience as unforgettable and something they will definitely attempt again, should the opportunity arise.

The team representing the Benoni City Times, Kate Rheeders and Jenny Seaton-Smith, took first place, winning a fabulous trip for four to Mauritius.

The Springs team came in second, winning a weekend stay at the Soweto Hotel, and the Brakpan mother and daughter team, Arauna and Bianca Bezuidenhout, finished third, winning a night’s stay and a full day spa treatment at the Bichwood Hotel.

The final, on Saturday, formed part of a family day, which was held at the Boksburg Rugby Club, in celebration of Heritage Day.

The teams’ final tasks required all three teams to start in front of the SA Reynolds Travel Centre, early on Saturday morning, where they had to identify 10 countries on a map, in order to get their next lead.

After this task was completed the teams had to inflate 50 balloons with helium gas, which turned out to be an extremely difficult task, thanks to a very strong and unpleasant wind. These balloons had to be tied together which made the task even more challenging.

After this, the teams got into their sponsored vehicles and drove to the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, where they had to find a hidden leaf.

Once this was achieved they were off to Hirsch’s, in Boksburg, where they had to assemble a Weber braai.

After a quick stop at Daihatsu in Boksburg, who sponsored the vehicles for the day, the teams had to each peal a bag of potatoes at the New beginnings Centre in Boksburg.

This task was the last one to be complete and it was Benoni’s Kate and Jenny who arrived at the Boksburg Rugby Club first to be crowned the winners of the race.

Their charity, the Rynpark Retiremet Village, received a R10 000 voucher from Hirsch’s.

Arauna told the Herald that the The Caxton Reynolds Race was a fantastic and enjoyable experience.

“We have learned about places that we never knew existed. There are so many beautiful and historical places right under our noses, and the race made it possible for us to get to know some of these,” said Arauna.

“Naturally we would have loved to win but it did not work out. The Benoni team did well and we congratulate them and wish them a lovely trip,” said Arauna.

Bianca added that she was very, very proud of her mom.

“The experience was unforgettable and if we could we would do it all over again,” said Bianca.

While supporters and sponsors waited for the teams to arrive at their final destination on Saturday, Matt Stern entertained the crowd alongside a dance group from Sibikwa.

Various food stalls selling anything from bunny chow to American corn dogs were there to warm up the crowd with their delicious food.
