Sip ’n Crochet stitches up 2024

The year’s last blankets were handed to Kairos Outside a few days before the meeting.

After handing a heap of blankets to the Kairos Prison Ministry, an international organisation that takes care of the families of imprisoned criminals, Sip ’n Crochet (Sip ‘n Cro) met for their second-last meeting of the year.

The meeting was on October 12 at Zonskyn in Springs. Though a smaller group than usual got together to socialise, crochet and enjoy good food, the atmosphere was no less joyful than previous meetings.

Sip ’n Cro is a charity group that crochets blankets or ponchos for charity, with the most recent project going to Kairos Outside.

The families that benefit from the ministry are often rejected by their communities because their family members are criminals, and they struggle to make ends meet.

Kairos Outside provides donations and emotional support to these families to uplift them. Sip ’n Cro donated blankets and ponchos to the project for distribution among beneficiary families.

Some completed knee blankets.

With all the projects concluded for the year, the year’s last meeting in November will be more social and less focused on crocheting to celebrate the upcoming holidays and Sip ’n Cro’s first anniversary.

The last few meetings taught crocheters the foundation stitch and to make a zig-zag blanket with scrap strands of yarn. They make for colourful knee-blankets and use the bits and pieces from previous projects, reducing waste.

The group, headed by Heather Bendeman, seeks new projects for their blankets. As it is summer, there is no immediate need for blankets, but Sip ’n Cro wants to plan for next year and start making blankets preemptively.

Anyone interested in joining the group or wanting to collaborate with Sip ’n Cro to provide warm blankets made with love to those in need, can call Bendeman on 083 580 4756.
