Support the East Rand Children’s Haven Adopt-a-Doll campaign

The 20-doll auction will end on November 4. Some dolls have already been adopted.

The East Rand Children’s Haven (ERCH) is holding its annual Adopt-a-Doll campaign on Facebook to raise funds for the children’s home.

The campaign started on Heritage Day and will end on World Adoption Day – November 4. During the campaign, the dolls go up for auction on the home’s Facebook page – East Rand Children’s Haven.

Each doll has a backstory, loosely inspired by children living in the home, and a name, though all the elements of a doll’s character are fictionalised to protect the home’s wards.

The winning bid receives the doll and a certificate of adoption to display. There are 20 dolls – 10 boys and 10 girls – representing the 20 children the home cares for.

The starting bids are R150, and the home encourages businesses and schools to raise funds to place a bid. That way, learners or employees can make a difference in a few children’s lives while participating in a fun annual tradition.

The dolls go up for auction/adoption every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 11:00, and bids close 30 hours later at 17:00 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

You can make your bids in the Facebook comments, and the winners are announced five hours after the bidding closes to allow time to identify the highest bid and arrange payment.

The home requires about R2.5m annually to meet the basic food, safety, education, medical and psychological needs of the children in its care, and the government subsidy only accounts for around half of it.

For this reason, the ERCH is always working on fundraising, including through its charity shop and other smaller campaigns throughout the year, and the annual doll auction is responsible for a large part of these efforts.

The target amount for this year is R30 000, and with three dolls on auction this week and two already adopted, 15 dolls are left to reach that target. For more information, follow the Facebook page and make your bids.
