Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from September 13 to 15.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – Four robbers terrorised a Sherwood Gardens family in their De Villiers Street home. The husband was sitting outside when he was confronted just before 19:00 by a man armed with a gun who forced him inside the house.

Three other intruders, also armed with guns, were already inside the home. They rounded up the family and tied up the husband, his wife and three children with shoelaces.

The robbers ransacked the residence, taking three TVs, a sound system, a laptop, a cellphone and other household items.

The loot was loaded in the husband’s Nissan 1400 bakkie. They also stole the wife’s vehicle, a white Nissan Tiida.

• A car parked at an address along Kiepersol Crescent in Dalpark was stripped of its wheels.

Saturday – A guard patrolling a section of railway line near Ergo Road in Maryvlei was robbed and attacked by a group of people.

The guard found himself surrounded by the mob at around 01:00. One of the perpetrators was armed with a panga.

They tied up the guard with shoelaces and robbed him of his two cellphones. Some of his attackers then got to work cutting cable from a pole in the vicinity.

The guard was later rescued by colleagues. It was found that over 65m of cable was cut and stolen.

• Two cellphones, a handbag and a school bag were stolen during a break-in at a home along Koos Vorster Avenue in Minnebron.

• A woman was assaulted and raped by her boyfriend at his place of residence along Station Road at around 22:30.

The man is reported to have accused the woman of having sex with his colleagues. He also questioned her about one of her previous relationships with an individual known to them.

He then struck her on the head with a brick and raped her. She was held captive for the night with the door of the room locked with a padlock and a chair wedged up against it.

The victim was only able to report the incident the following day when she was able to flee from the room.

The man was arrested and detained at the Brakpan Police Station.

Sunday – A man reported being raped by another man at an address along Byron Street in Dalpark. The incident took place between midnight and 01:30.

The victim was at the house with some friends. After falling asleep in the back of his car, he was awakened by three men who invited him inside the house.

He was taken to a room where his clothing was removed and he was told to lie on the floor. The victim was sodomised by one of the men, who then left to join his friends.

They returned a short while later and asked the victim for the password to his cellphone and the PIN for his bank card. They then left again. It was not disclosed whether the victim provided the men with this information.

The victim attempted to leave but was stopped by a man at the gate. He managed to push his way past this man and ran into the street where he hid behind a tree.

The victim then watched as his car, a red Hyundai Atos, was driven away. In addition to the rape, a case of motor vehicle theft is also under investigation.

• A woman was sexually assaulted by a man in the Mgongo informal settlement (Old Brakpan Location).

The victim was approached by a woman at about 14:00 who asked her if she would go to the shop for her and buy cold drink.

The victim agreed and later returned with the cold drink. The woman then asked the victim to go inside the shack and fetch glasses.

The woman also asked her if she would take a glass of cold drink to a man inside the bedroom. When the victim gave the man his drink, he took it back to the kitchen and then returned to the bedroom.

He pushed the victim on the bed where he sexually assaulted her. She fled from the shack and shared her ordeal with community members.
