Motorcyclists warned of spike in bike hijackings

This method of motorcycle hijacking is on the increase.

Local police have urged bikers to be vigilant following a rise in motorcycle hijackings in Brakpan.

According to Constable Audrey Buthelezi, corporate communications officer for Brakpan SAPS, an alarming number of cases have been registered within a short period.

She explained the hijackers use a similar modus operandi to get their hands of the bikes – using rope or wire across the road or throwing stones at the rider.

“Riders are alerted to take extra precaution whenever they are on the road and where possible to avoid travelling during the night,” she said.

“Current hotspots for these hijackings are Location Road, New Kleinfontein Road, and Main Reef Road passing through the Plastic City informal settlement.”

It is advised that riders avoid these routes, especially in the evening and early morning.

“Although the SAPS has had success with the recovery of some motorbikes, the criminality has not ceased,” said Buthelezi.

“High visibility during the identified times at the hotspots has been prioritised by police and community members are encouraged to report any criminal activities or suspicions of criminality to the SAPS immediately so that these criminals can be brought to book.”
