Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from August 16 to 18.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – No priority cases were reported at the time of publication.

Saturday – A Leachville man was ambushed by three robbers when he returned home from the shop at 20:30.
The Sudwala Avenue resident had parked his car in the garage and was heading towards the boot of the vehicle to retrieve the loaf of bread he had purchased when he saw three men approaching.

They ordered the victim to lie on the ground and then removed his shoes. The robbers tied up the victim and searched him, taking his cellphone, wallet (containing bank cards, cash, his ID and driving permit) and the keys to his car and home.

Two of the robbers were armed with guns which they pointed at the victim. The robbers then demanded laptops from inside the house and tried to gain access by forcing the victim to knock on the door in the hope that his wife and children would open for him.

The victim’s knocks went unanswered and the robbers searched him once more and took another cellphone before fleeing.

They are suspected to have made their getaway in a white vehicle which the victim had previously spotted parked at the corner near his house. A case of house robbery is under investigation.

Sunday – Two hijackings were reported. The first took place at around 17:30 when a taxi operator was robbed of the white Toyota HiAce he was driving. The driver picked up two passengers along Main Reef Road in Anzac.

When they reached Station Road, one of the passengers attacked the driver and tried to strangle him.

The man also pointed a gun at the driver. The second passenger also threatened the driver with a firearm and then pushed him out of the vehicle.

The second hijacking took place along Main Reef Road, near the Plastic City informal settlement, and saw a rider robbed of his motorcycle after driving into wire or rope across the road.

This method of motorcycle hijacking is on the rise in Brakpan with several cases reported to police recently.
The victim was travelling on his blue Honda at around 21:30 when he fell from the bike after driving into rope which had been tied between two objects at neck height.

While on the ground, he was approached by four men who hit and kicked him, and also threw a a brick at him.
One of his attackers then pushed the bike into the informal settlement.
