August 11 marked the two year anniversary since SPOT’s very first outreach sterilisation.
Sannette Bosman from SPOT (Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team NPC) told the Brakpan Herald that the team has, to date, assisted in sterilising 204 dogs and cats with the assistance of various programmes, vets and organisations coming on board to help.
“This week, thanks to Tales of Tails, another 40 animals will be sterilised,” she said.
“We don’t have a clinic or practice but work tirelessly to find ways of assisting the less fortunate animals in our community, with very little help and support locally.
“It’s a challenge working full-time to support my family as a single mom. Most of the physical work for outreach is done by myself and often my son, Brandon.
“With so many domestic companions in Brakpan needing a helping hand, it has become overwhelming trying to accommodate all the requests we receive for assistance and finding new animals regularly that require some sort of intervention.

“I’m often asked why I spend my free time taking on the responsibility of helping animals when there is no benefit or payment in it for me. The answer is simple.
“I found my passion a little late in life to make a career out of it so I spend time doing what I love and the satisfaction of knowing I’m making a difference is enough.
“I’m very fortunate to have friends and family that support our organisation in various ways, as well as a handful of regular sponsors and donors that are amazing.”
SPOT is a registered NPC and able to issue 18A tax receipts for any donations.
“We are proud of our achievements over the past two years, especially reaching parts of the community to educate on animal welfare that would otherwise still believe in historical traditions and practices based on debunked home remedies,” added Bosman.
“There’s still a lot of work ahead to reach more animals and although it’s overwhelming, there’s no stopping anytime soon.”
The NPC’s main objective is to promote responsible pet ownership through education and assistance and also to prevent cruelty, neglect or abuse.
