Truck driver fights off abductors

The driver was duped into stopping on the side of the road but quickly turned the tables on the assailants.

Cases of armed robbery and kidnapping have been opened at the Brakpan Police Station after a truck driver and his assistant were ambushed by criminals on Saturday.

According to SAPS reports, the pair was travelling at around 07:30 in a white Mercedes-Benz truck along Hiedelberg Road, near Koot Street in Withok Estates, when a white Fiat Palio slowed down beside them.

The occupants told the truck driver to check the truck’s tyres, indicating there was a problem, and then drove off.

The driver pulled off on the side of the road to inspect the truck and a white Volkswagen Polo pulled up behind them.

Three men climbed out of the Polo and approached the driver. One of the men pointed a gun at him and he was forced into the Polo.

The trio drove off with the driver, who was placed in the back of the car. One of the men attempted to tie the driver’s hands with rope but he fought back and kicked him.

He then grabbed the Polo driver, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and the car swerved off the road.

The Polo came to a stop and the men ran off, abandoning the vehicle. The driver also got out of the car and set off on foot.

He flagged down officers in a patrolling police car and informed them of the incident.

They returned to the scene and the driver found his cellphone had been stolen. His assistant was found unharmed near some houses in the surrounding area.
