OPINION: Water woes in Sunair Park

According to the resident, the suburb is repeatedly without water for long periods of the day.

Neil Jacob writes by email:

We reside in Sunair Park and we are having a massive water issue.

Our water is switched off at 06:00 and only comes back at 21:00. During the day we cannot use the toilets, bath or do washing. We cannot drink water.

It’s become such a massive issue we are facing and yet we are paying so much of money for water. We need help!
Our ward councillors are not providing any information and are keeping quiet on this matter.

We are hundreds of people that will form a strike and a petition on this water issue.

I will be involving the EFF as soon as possible. I have made contact with them to assist us with this water crisis that we are going through on a daily basis.

At the current moment, we had to leave our homes and find an alternative option to live at a hotel or self-accommodation just so we can have water.

The water is fully cut off from the early hours of the morning up until late at night.

Editor’s note: Comment was requested from the City of Ekurhuleni and the following response was received from spokesperson Zweli Dlamini:

“We were not aware that the water goes away at 06:00 and comes back at 21:00,” he said.

“However, this could be caused by the low supply we are receiving from Rand Water. These areas get supply from a direct feed from Rand Water and then we boost the supply through the pumps.

“The pumps can only boost what is available. If the supply is low, then these areas may experience these issues due to the incoming supply.

“We will deploy a water tanker in the meantime until the supply stabilises on the supply line.

“The pressure will only stabilise once the incoming supply is stable, and this is dependent on the demand on the system.”
