Newly elected Gauteng SAPS junior commissioners inaugurated

Dalpark Secondary School learner Nhlanhla Mokone waves the flag high for Brakpan and her school.

Gauteng SAPS continues to engage with learners through various social crime prevention programmes such as the Junior Commissioner Programme.

The inauguration of the newly elected junior commissioners led by Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner for crime detection Major-General Mbuso Khumalo took place in Midrand on Saturday.

Khumalo was joined by West Rand district commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana, various distinguished guests, senior SAPS management and the newly elected junior commissioners.

The junior commissioners are learners from schools across the province who were elected following a selection process earlier this year.

Among these learners is Dalpark Secondary School’s Nhlanhla Mokone. She won as a station junior commissioner and went on to compete at district level where she placed in the top four.

Mokone then competed on a provincial level with other districts and placed second. She is the deputy provincial junior commissioner.

During the inauguration, messages of support were pledged by various stakeholders that included the junior mayor of the City of Johannesburg, the former junior provincial commissioner, Ambassador of Police, safety and security, Provincial Community Policing Board, Department of Education, Department of Community Safety and the National Youth Crime Prevention Desk chairperson.

The Junior Commissioner Programme is one of the initiatives amongst many that envisage advancing and promoting the safety of learners and educators in schools.

Moreover, the focus is on ensuring the development and nurturing of leadership skills and capabilities of all school learners by providing guidance and mentorship initiatives to prepare them for future leadership endeavours and becoming progressive and responsible citizens.

The objectives of the programme are to promote and develop leadership development and character building, to provide for youth stakeholder engagement platforms, to create an opportunity for early and long-term mentorship, to promote and encourage diversity amongst learners and to recognise young people as key role players in school safety.
