Two cable thieves sentenced

Each man waas charged with a count of tampering with essential infrastructure and a count of theft.

Last month in the Brakpan Regional Court, two suspects were charged and sentenced for tampering with and theft of essential infrastructure.

Tumelo Motloung (22) was sentenced on July 3, and Charles Meyer (28) on July 31.

The charges were one count of tampering with essential infrastructure and one count of theft of essential infrastructure.

Motloung pleaded not guilty on both counts, and Meyer pleaded guilty on both. They were found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison for each count, to run concurrently.

The sentences allow them to serve the two sentences of eight years together instead of one after the other.

Motloung stole three transformers, a copper cable and copper wiring belonging to Transnet. Meyer stole cellphone tower cables belonging to MTN.

The application to appeal the convictions on both counts in Motloung’s case was refused. Meyer did not apply to appeal, and it was ruled that the sentence could not be reviewed.
