Trio nabbed for murder, supermarket robbery

Two men were killed as the robbers fled with cash stolen from the shop.

Three men have been arrested in connection with a robbery at a Dalview supermarket in which two people died.

As reported by the Brakpan Herald at the time, two Bangladeshi nationals were killed during the incident at a Voortrekker Road supermarket on July 23.

“Three males entered the store at 20:20. They were all armed with handguns and demanded money,” said Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Captain Pearl van Staad.

“They took all the money out of the tills.”

Van Staad told the Herald two other robbers stood guard at the store’s entrance and threatened two employees at gunpoint.

“The males in the store then ran out of the shop firing shots at the two employees at the door,” she said.

One of the employees sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died on the scene.

“When the paramedics arrived, the second employee also died,” added the spokesperson.

According to Van Staad, paramedics could not find any bullet wounds on this victim and the cause of his death was unclear.

The robbers fled the scene in a dark-coloured Volkswagen Passat with a loot of about R10 000. Six cartridges were found on the scene.

Three suspects were nabbed last Wednesday.

“The Ekurhuleni Task Team and Brakpan SAPS Crime Prevention left no stone unturned,” said van Staad.

She said CCTV footage of the robbery at the shop led to the tracing of the suspects. The investigation led the team to Benoni where one suspect was located.

“He refused to cooperate. The team was not discouraged and involved other role players, where members swiftly responded,” she said.

“It led them to a tavern in Kempton Park. A suspect was cornered and arrested while opening his vehicle. In the vehicle a gun was recovered.

“The third suspect was also traced in Benoni and led the team to his residence.”

A search of the property yielded four firearms and a large amount of ammunition. Cellphones were also seized.

The arrested men face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms, murder and business robbery.

Acting Brakpan SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Anneline Naude applauded the members for their consistency and determination.
