Illegal connections to be removed

An operation to remove the connections is scheduled for this year.

The illegal electricity connections sprouting from infrastructure in the vicinity of Main Reef Road, near The Rock Raceway, are on schedule to be removed this year.

This was confirmed by the City of Ekurhuleni in response to an enquiry by the Brakpan Herald on the theft of electricity in the area.

It is believed these connections run into the Msholozi informal settlement on the Brakpan and Benoni border and the Plastic City informal settlement.

According to city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the last operation in the area was conducted in March last year.

“These operations require resources and planning. It needs to be conducted with the assistance of SAPS, EMPD and other security officials due to protests and safety risks,” he said.

Asked how often the area is monitored, Dlamini explained monitoring and removal of illegal connections are done continuously.

“The planning and resources required for operations are done based on the extent of the illegal connections and security risk assessment where the majority of identified hot spots are done by internal staff only,” he said.

Residents are requested to report illegal connections to the city’s call centre on 0860 543 000.
