Outreach team helps animals in informal settlement

SPOT is passionate about helping animals in need.

Sunny’s Pet Outreach Team (SPOT) held their first outreach day on Saturday to assist the animals living in the informal settlement along Location Road.

Sanette Bosman, former chairperson of the Brakpan SPCA, along with other passionate individuals are involved in rescue and outreach in the Brakpan area to help less fortunate animals.

Bosman stated the animals living inside the settlement have been on her mind for a long time as she realised they needed help.

“They don’t have a choice whether they want to live there. They don’t know any other life and our aim is to make their lives as comfortable, pleasant and loving as possible,” she said.

According to her, removing the animals is not a solution, as they will be replaced and the next ones will have the same life and the cycle will continue.

“By educating the owners and helping the animals, their lives change for the better. We help get them dewormed, give them a blanket to keep warm, dip them against ticks and fleas and, more importantly, replace heavy and uncomfortable chains with collars and leashes,” she said.

“We are also working towards getting the animals sterilised, but we need sponsors to enable this much-needed priority.”

Bosman explained SPOT was met with open arms, and the majority of owners want better for their pets.

“They were happy to get rid of the ropes and chains, but we just didn’t have enough to help all of them,” she said.

Outreach programmes will be conducted on a regular basis until all the animals have been assisted to live happier lives and the community is assisted to become self-sufficient in looking after their companions with care and compassion.
