Toll collectors at the N17 Denne Plaza fell prey to robbers during the early hours of last Thursday morning.
A security guard was also injured during the robbery, which was carried out by four men wearing baseball caps and blue jackets similar to those worn by security personnel.
Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Capt Pearl van Staad told the Herald the robbers were travelling on foot and two of them were armed with handguns. At 01:20, the foursome confronted a 32-year-old female cashier in a booth.
“Two of them pointed guns at her and told her to open the door to the booth,” said van Staad.
“They demanded money from the till and took her cellphone and handbag.”
The men also took money and a cellphone from another toll collector.
“They left through the gate over the highway where they robbed the other offramp toll gate. A security guard was hit on the head and taken to hospital before SAPS arrived on the scene,” said van Staad.
She confirmed a case of business robbery is under investigation.
