Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to Brakpan police from May 13 to 15.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

Friday – The driver of a white Ford Ranger bakkie was hijacked in the driveway of his Hamilton Street home just before 06:00.

The victim was leaving for work and was locking the gate when he was confronted by two men. One of the men pointed a gun at the victim’s head and forced him to lie on the ground.

His accomplice then climbed into the bakkie. The gunman searched the victim and took his cellphone. Both then fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle.

• A cellphone, a tablet and a router were stolen during a break-in at a residence along Kitzinger Avenue.

Saturday – The occupants of a white Hyundai i10 hijacked the driver of a white Mercedes-Benz in Leachville.

The victim arrived at his Privet Avenue home at around 20:00 and was exiting his vehicle to open the gate, when he noticed the Hyundai parked in the vicinity.

He left his car’s engine running and the keys in the ignition and proceeded to open the gate. The victim then saw a man get out of the Hyundai.

Screaming for help, the victim was unable to get to his car to remove the keys from the ignition. A second man then emerged from the Hyundai and he and the first man got into the Mercedes and drove away.

• A Wenden Avenue bottle store was burgled of liquor valued at over R50 000.

• A car parked at an address along Olga Mitchell Street in Anzac was broken into.

The vehicle’s radio and battery, and other valuables were stolen.

Sunday – A man was robbed of his belongings while walking along Platinum Road in Vulcania at 05:40. Three men were walking in front of the victim and, as he passed them, two of the men pulled out firearms and threatened him.

He was searched and robbed of his cellphone, wallet and firearm.

• A male taxi commuter was robbed at gunpoint after boarding a light green taxi along Voortrekker Road at around 15:45.

While travelling, the victim was grabbed from behind by another passenger who pointed a gun at him. The gunman demanded the victim’s belongings and took his cellphone, bank card and wristwatch.

He also demanded the victim’s bank card PIN and the taxi driver stopped at an ATM where money was withdrawn from his account.

They drove around with the victim for a little while longer and then forced him out of the vehicle.
