Duo sentenced to eight years behind bars

The sentences will run concurrently and both were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Two men arrested in 2017 were recently sentenced in the Brakpan Regional Court for aggravated robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The pair, Lukhanyo Nogqala (29) and Thamsanqa Nhlapo (36) were apprehended after a business robbery in Apex, Benoni.

“On October 16, 2017, radio control dispatched a case of business robbery in Apex and members of Brakpan SAPS and CMS Security gave chase,” said Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Capt Pearl van Staad.

“They managed to apprehend two suspects who were found with house break-in implements in a bag, and a pistol was recovered nearby the scene with one round of ammunition.

“The suspects were detained and the case docket was allocated to Det Sgt Sibusiso Xaba from the Trio Task Team for further investigation.”

Van Staad told the Herald both appeared in court several times and remained in custody.

On February 3, they were convicted with the court handing down eight-year jail terms to both for aggravated robbery and three years for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The sentences will run concurrently and both were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
