Learning from the best

Steyn took it as an opportunity to learn from the professionals.

Dalpark’s Nathan Steyn has taken a major step towards realising his dream of being a top cricketer. The 18-year-old recently toured with the Titan’s senior squad in Bloemfontein for a T20 tournament.

Although he did not get a chance to play, being part of the squad meant a lot to him. Steyn took it as an opportunity to learn from the professionals.

“You can never learn enough and with the type of players we have in the side you are always going to learn,” he said.

“We have guys who have played more than 10 years of franchise cricket. So, it was a massive learning curve for me. I utterly enjoyed it.”

With the team losing by narrow margins, the youngster saw how much of a difference small margins can make.

“That’s the one thing I can take away. It’s not always a game about 100% but it can be about one-percenters. That’s what it can come down to, one run.”

The youngster who dreams of playing in the u-20 world cup in the future is excited about how much he has learned from being around professional players.

“On a personal level, I’ve connected with a few guys. Guys who have played lots of cricket in their lives. I’ve learned so many lessons that are actually benefiting me as a person and as a cricketer,” he said.

“It’s a massive jump (from juniors to seniors). You can’t compare at all. You need to be so on top of your game. I watched one of the best bowlers Matthew Arnold bowl one of his best deliveries and still get driven through the covers for four. It’s such a small margin for error there.”

Now that he is back home, he plans to use what he learned to perform for his school Marais Viljoen.

“It’s one thing to learn something but you still have to show what you can do on the field and off the field,” said the fast bowler.
