Youngsters aim for honours

The team’s ambition to win the league seems to be more than just a reality as they have been scoring for fun.

Brakpan Spurs u-17 side have been impressive since the Eastern Local Football Association season restarted following the suspension of the league due to Covid-19 cases.

The young side has won all three matches they have played, with Sunday’s 7-3 victory over Benoni Northerns being the latest.

The club has shown there are plenty of potential stars in their ranks. Udoka Mogoboya (hat-trick), Setshaba Maponya (two goals), Kamogelo Tshoma and Olwethu Khumalo all got their names on the scoresheet.

The team’s ambition to win the league seems to be more than just reality as they have been scoring at a whim.
Spurs beat their biggest title rivals, Alberton, 3-1 the week before.

This was a big win as Alberton was previously unbeaten and had been the only side to win against Brakpan earlier in the season. The youngsters returned to action after the Covid-19 break, with a 3-0 hammering of Kempton Park earlier in August.

There were injury scares in that match, as Mogoboya and Kamohelo Mkhwanazi were forced off the field due to injuries. Teboho Maleka, Maponya and Akhona Ndawonde scored to give Spurs the victory.

“I’m proud of the boys and the effort they put in. We will try to win every single game that is left.

“We’ll take every game as a final. We don’t want to settle for second best. I have confidence in my boys and trust they all understand the importance of each of the remaining games,” said coach Jabulani Munene.

On Sunday, they will face Old Benonians at home as they look to march to the league title.

What has been of concern to Munene has been the first team who have enjoyed mixed results of late. This has been due to them not having enough players. Some of the u-17 stars subsequently had to feature for the senior team.

“We do not have players. We need to sign new players for the senior team so we don’t strain the young boys by making them play two games per week,” said Munene.
