A visit to the library is safer than going to the shops

"I am utterly disgruntled and hope that the management of these institutions stop hiding behind levels and take into consideration why we have these types of services."

Evonne Scheepers writes by email:

With reference to the letter in last week’s edition of the Herald, ‘Closure of Brakpan Library a blow for bookworms ‘, I fully agree with Silvano’s viewpoint.

If we drop off and collect then there’s no gathering. The drop-off point can even be moved to the inside to the first entrance of the door, thus giving the security guard who normally collects the books extra social distance.

This will mean it will be safer to collect and return books at the library compared to visiting shops, doctors’ surgeries, gyms, restaurants and so.

The spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, states in his response that ‘patrons are encouraged to contact their local library’; however 9/10 they do not answer the phone when you try and make contact, even during level one.

He further states that arrangements can be made for drop-off and collect, but why is the door closed until further notice as per the note on the door?

This effectively means they should be operating. Please also take your senior citizens into consideration.

They and others do not have access to or knowledge of using smartphones to join the virtual library.

I am utterly disgruntled and hope the management of these institutions stop hiding behind levels and take into consideration why we have these type of services.

Covid has been with us for 15 months already.
