Steyn bowling to greatness

Now he wants to emulate his hero, former Proteas’ paceman Dale Steyn.

Dalpark’s Nathan Steyn has taken a huge step towards realising his dream of playing cricket for the Proteas one day.

The young bowler put on top-class performances at the recent u-19 Franchise Cubs tournament in Stellenbosch, which saw his Titans side get to the final.

Although Steyn’s side lost to the Cape Cobras in the final, Steyn displayed great ability which earned him a call up to the South African u-19 squad.

“It was a great experience. It’s a massive emotional roller coaster but just a great experience overall,” he said.

Steyn has been in love with cricket since the tender age of eight when he first played the game.

“It started from primary school, building up through to national weeks and then getting through the ranks and ending up where I am,” he said.

The love for the sport has seen him focus so much on cricket that he had to leave another sport he has a passion for, rugby.

“It was a massive heartbreak for me to try and speak to my parents about not wanting to play rugby because I’m a passionate guy and I love sports, all forms of sports. It was a tough situation to say ‘listen I think I want to make cricket work’. I think anybody who wants to make a specific sport work you can’t focus on a few sports but you’ve got to get into one thing and focus on it,” said the young Steyn.

Now he wants to emulate his hero, former Proteas’ paceman Dale Steyn.

“Massive role model for me,” Nathan said when he talks about the former test cricketer.

“I just like his entire set up about everything. You know the way he went about things. My surname is also Steyn so he was someone I looked up to from the very first day I started playing cricket to today.”

Like Dale Steyn, Nathan wants to be world-renowned.

“I want to be the best in the world. I don’t want to only participate,” he said.

Before going all the way to international level the 17-year-old is looking to get selected for the Titans’ Cub side for next year’s tournament.

If he gets selected for the national squad again he will be heading to the u-19 World Cup.

“That’s my biggest goal as a high school kid,” he said.

The local youngster loves his cricket.

“Every single time I can go to a cricket practice I go. It doesn’t matter with whom, I’ll always join in. It’s something that will always be a part of me. I just love every aspect of the game,” he said.

“I practise four or five times a week and if you add in games then I’m busy with cricket six out of the seven days a week.”
